Individually cut each color and then applied?

Thanks but as I would need the design on the top tier, wondering how to go about getting the tops to all matched and clean? They design really doesn't look like randomly cut pieces either.

The top looks to be the same, but could also be done in all white fondant, with the black squares added. For the bottom tier, you could easily design a template and use that to measure and cut the pieces.

have you ever seen sod being laid down? to join two pieces together, they overlap the two sections of sod and cut through both at the same time, remove the excess and it's a perfect fit because both pieces are joined together with the exact same cut --

so i'd do the same thing here and freehand cut the whole thing -- overlap two pieces of fondant -- make one cut through each, remove the excess and join them together -- repeat the process all the way around

has got it right!  Look at the video link for a wax paper transfer method to get it onto the cake.  BTW, I used to hang wallpaper and the method is the same for corners and other weird areas: Overlap, cut through both layers and remove the excess.

Thanks ladies! Not sure why I didn't think of that! Will definitely use the wax paper transfer method! Will update with the finished cake tomorrow :)
