Icing A Cake

I need some tips on how I can ice a cake  on a card board  platter whithout getting icing on the platter

I take strips of parchment paper and put them under the cake (I use about 4 strips of parchment). When I am done icing I pull the strips out from under and voila! No icing on the platter.
