AI have been asked to make a cake for my brother's baby shower. The colors are baby blue and brown. I had the cake figured out until my brother called to say that he wants strawberry cake with strawberry icing and NO FONDANT! I have considered coloring the buttercream blue and adding a drop of Loranns strawberry flavored oil. Will the drops of the oil and gel color change the taste of the buttercream?

why not just cover the strawberry icing with a coat of blue icing -- or ask him if decorating the pinky colored strawberry icing in blue and brown will be ok with him --

to answer your question yes the oil will change the flavor to strawberry -- the food color isn't usually detectable in icing -- you want to use the oil very sparingly of course -- taste test as you go till you get the desired flavor intensity -- they are very concentrated

AK8memphis thanks i was scared that the oil from the flavoring would affect the texture of the buttercream. And if all else fells im going to try your second suggestion.

nah, the only icing that would be adversely be affected by a flavored oil is royal icing -- the oil will keep it from setting up crispy hard --

but i mean the flavor from using real strawberries is great

A[@]julia1812 that was awesome! Did you use Lorann's strawberry oil? How many drops did you use?

No, i used fresh strawberries, strained to get the seeds out. I added about 30ml/ cup of the strawberry juice to the BC and added blue food coloring
