What's the difference between red velvet and chocolate cupcakes/cake?

Besides the color!

Red velvet is it's own thing. Popular here in the south,,,, and I HATE them all. Just seem like greasy cake....yuck. I am pretty good at baking and tried Cakeman Raven's and two other popular recipes... still yuck. I really just think it is the cream cheese frosting that traditional goes with it that "makes" red velvet popular. The small amount of cocoa powder just doesn't really impart that chocolate flavor you may expect. Maybe it is just to hide the nasty red dye taste?

Chocolate is chocolate...IMHO.. heaven on earth.

I make a mean chocolate cake if I do say so myself!  The first time I ever made a red velvet cake for my family they ate it and said, "It doesn't taste like anything... it's just plain cake."  I have to agree.  It's pretty much a red vanilla cake to me.
