Chocolate Buttercream Frosting Got Lighter In Color Midway Through Decorating My Cake -- Help!

Does anyone know why my Wilton Chocolate Buttercream (all shortening based and used water instead of milk) would get lighter in color while decorating and how to prevent it in the future


?  I made the 3D Wilton Bear Cake and it took me a long time to pipe the fur on it and when I put more frosting in the bag, it was getting lighter.  Leaving it overnight didn't make a difference in the color.  Help!  Attached is the photo so you can see it.
