Every year for Christmas, I give my kid sister (She's going on 17) a lesson on something cake-wise, an addendum to the recipe Bible I gave her a few years back, and a new toy.
I want to get her a "starter" stand mixer for Christmas this year. Nothing fancy, nothing super pricey, but reasonable enough that I can teach her how to make meringue buttercreams.
I live in Australia, she is in the USA. I have no idea what is on the US market these days, and as I am flying into town, I will need to order it online before I get there.
Any recommendations or advice?
I really appreciate your help!

Hamilton Beach and Sunbeam are brands I recommend.

I did read much of what was written there. However, most of those conversations are about products and needs that are far more "professional" than what I think I'm looking for in this instance. That's why I thought I'd start a new thread! Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it!
it all depends on how much you wish to spend. I'd say go for a KA 5 qt. It's a workhorse and has some pretty snazzy colors that would make it a very cool present and be something that she will have for a very long time.
QuirkySylvia: here's an interesting tidbit this months CI magazine had an article on their opinion of best stand mixers for home use. The KA came in the top three places....I think it was the 7 qt. Pro in first, followed by the 6 qt. and 5 qt. pro mixers. Read it at the library today, thought I'd pass it on.
AThanks y'all, I just found out that I can acquire a 5qt KA with some of my mountain of airline miles. Awesome! I appreciate the advice!
