Has anyone ever intended to make a cake of a certain size, say for 30 people, and ended up with a huge cake instead?  I won't lose money on the cake, but it came out much bigger than I anticipated because I had to make an 8" tier to fit a fondant monkey on top.  So the bottom layer is 10" by 3" and the top is 8" by 2".  It's a cute cake but the customer is going to have some serious leftovers!  It weighs a ton too!  Oh well, living and learning.

AYes! I made a barrel a couple months ago, it was suppose to serve about 30, and I thought I would carve off a lot more than what I did. Make sure the client knows you made it too big, so they don't think your servings are too generous and order less cake next time. Yep...I had to make the hay bale bigger because I made the hat too big :)...The actual cost of the added cake wasn't much but it took me 8 hours to pipe it!
