Hi have to make a dragon and have it sitting on the side of a tiered cake, wrapping itself around the middle tier.  I was thinking rice krispies but have never done that.  I was thinking gumpaste for the wings.  I am a perfectionist so I really don't want this looking amateurish....

What do you all recommend???

how hard is it to scultp detail into the rice krispies?  Like for the face, would that be difficult?

You covered it with modeling chocolate?

WHat kind of paint did you use to airbrush the fruit roll up?

when i use rkt, i put it the major shape of the object. the profile in the rkt

for example i'd have an indention in the rkt where the eyes go

but if the eyes were hooded i'd do that in modeling choco

and i'd apply the eye itself with other mediums, choco or fondant or marzipan

like if the tail is scaley of course i'd cut the scales into the choco

for dragon feet i'd use rkt for dragon toes i'd use the choco

(that was a good contrast finally)

you'll get the feel of it when you get going

most detail goes into the choco

the rkt is the base

fruit rollups for wings is genius, leahmcd!

and for what it's worth

i use the regular recipe for rice krispie treats less one cup of rice krispies

and mold it hot out of the pan into the general dragon shape (in this case)

pack it real tighty tight

let it set up overnight to get the gelatin to do it's jellifying thing

but i have used the store bought rkt for snall items and that works too

we just particularly love rkt--scraps are not a problem icon_biggrin.gif

i also add some vanilla mmm--use real butter mmmm

I just use fondant with a little tylose added to it, I start the body with a big sausage of fondant then add on the legs , I use spaghetti to hold them on and give them a bit of stability, same with the head. Joins that you don't want to see can be covered up with scales, I roll little balls of fondant and squash them it gives a more natural look that if you cut them out.

I think I have a couple of dragons in my pics if you want a visual.

Yes, I will.  Cake not due for another couple of months, but I'll be working on my sculpting skills.
