My Hubbies Brilliant Idea For Packaging...cruffles (Cake Balls)
Baking By sfandm Updated 24 Apr 2013 , 6:26pm by CakeBiteDelight
Yes, they are clear egg cartons. I couldn't find the correct size box to hold a dozen, as this is how I sell them in my shop, and so my DH said 'put them in egg cartons, they make clear ones you know'. So I ordered off ebay for less than $100 and got 500 with free shipping, and here is the finished product, complete with dressing. See, even husbands have great ideas. I love the look of these!!!!
Another member a while back said she used the clear egg containers that were offered at the supermarket (with eggs in them). She used her containers to store tips and set up royal icing flowers and gum paste flowers, etc. Many of us were jealous; we'd never seen clear cartons. This packaging for your "cruffles" looks FABULOUS! I am very impressed that you have this gorgeous, professional, packaging for 20 cents a carton! The ribbon, label, and mini-cupcake liners are probably another 20-30 cents. WELL DONE!
that is awesome! can you send us the link where you bought them? and also who makes your logo tags? soo cute!
To all responses, thanks for the nice comments.
Where did I get the cartons from?
I got them on ebay, it was a one time deal, but there are other sites that sell them, just do a search for "clear egg cartons" I have put a couple links in a previous response. But watch ebay, you never know.
Where did I get the logo tags from?
I made them. I have been making my own business cards, brochures, and every other business type thing for a long time, I even made my own scratch off
cards, Bakers Dozen cards, and Frequent Customer cards. They have been a BIG hit. I am enclosing pics to show everyone interested.
BTW, I have a program I just save everything to, and I just rearrange the cupcake on the scratch off card and print several of each sheet so that the cupcake isn't in the same place. I then attach silver stickers made especially for scratch offs to each card, and then tear apart.
Sorry I can't find the links, so here they are again.

So I ordered these and got them yesterday...tried packaging a couple... but they don't shut completely from the sides and corners right?? There's a half inch opening on 3 sides... that is how they work right? Just wanted to make sure :) Thanks!
Yes ma'am. there is a small gap, but several "buttons" as I call them, that snap together. The cruffles will be ok like this, due to the dipped chocolate surrounding them. Share a pic of your finished dozen. Thanks.
AThank you!! Yes, there are several that snap...just wanted to be sure I got the ones you referred to :) yes, I figured the truffles will be fine since they're dipped... Thank you!
ADo you think these would work for 6 count packaging? Would they look nice? http://www.eggboxes.com/ecom-prodshow/6-Plastic-Egg-Carton.html
I would call the company and ask for a sample and see what they look like first before buying a huge amount
The ones I bought on ebay are perforated down the middle, so my customers can actually "share" their dozen if they want.

jiya11, I saw those online too, but they're expensive compared to the eBay ones:)
Hmmm... For this current order, I think I will look for some tins at dollar tree or michaels etc locally... But I will keep an eye out for the egg carton on eBay. I guess those would work for macroons too.. :)
Would you mind sharing the sellers name?? I would like to contact her on ebay and see if she has anymore available...thanks!!

Annie~~I had emailed the OP when this post first appeared. She was very gracious and replied that her deal on the plastic egg cartons was an extraordinarily great sale that she was lucky to find (OP: "So I ordered off ebay for less than $100 and got 500 with free shipping"). The sale was apparently a "one time only sale".
I've done a LOT of online research and one of the least expensive options I found is with Murray McMurray Hatchery for their 5CP5P product. (This is very similar to what OP describes: a 12 egg container that can be cleanly separated to create two 6 egg containers.)
You can see a photo on this link:

Shipping is $4.95 which would make the total cost around $25+tax for 50 cartons (or 100 six-cavity cartons).
(BTW~~possible correction on the name of the carton. It may be OVOTHERM, not evotherm.)
Your husband is a genius! I've always used clear egg cartons for forming flowers, but now I'm looking around the internet for a place here in Mexico that makes them so I can order them in bulk. What a cool idea! It might work for mini-muffins and brownie bites, too, if you're not looking to keep them in there too long - I guess the air circulation would dry them out. I'd never thought of these for sorting my icing tips, either. I'm desperate to organize them without taking up too much space, and this might just be the solution!
Sorry I haven't been keeping up with this post. I can't seem to find the seller at this moment, my ebay won't let me go back 6 months to purchase history, but there is a site that has free shipping. The link is here.

This is still a good deal, especially with free shipping. As soon as I can, I will go thru my large stack of last years receipts and try to find the contact info for you.
I found some really nice plastic boxes made especially for cake balls at www.aspecialtybox.com. I ordered both the 6 and 12 cake ball sizes. As soon as I get them, I'll report back!

Thank you for posting this link. I just contacted www.aspecialtybox.com about a sample package to see if specific boxes and inserts will work with the different chocolates and chocolate covered Oreos I hope to sell in 2013. Customer Service said that they just relocated their sample processing section and suggested I call back after Valentine's Day when the "busiest time of the year" is over, to order some sample products.
They charge actual per unit cost per sample + shipping + $10 fee for handling.
Most of the candy packaging I've seen ranges from $.50 to $1.00 per package as a final cost. Even the plastic egg cartons end up in that price range. If it is possible to get a box with 1-3 inserts that can cover a wide range of chocolates, that would be perfect!
AI just received my order today from A Specialty Box. I really liked the quality of the cake ball holders, and was only disappointed because the top and bottom do not "click" together to close; the top just lays on the bottom. This could be remedied by using decorative tape, stickers or ribbon to keep them closed. The website shows white boxes with the plastic holders inside, which is probably the correct way to use them, but I like the look of the cake balls inside the plastic holders only.
Love this idea! I have been looking for a packaging idea for my cake bites! Thanks hubby:)
