Which tool is used to make hair on fondant 3D figures? I always roll out my fondant thinly with hands but it gets a little time consuming when I have to make lots of fondant humans.. I know there is a certain tool for it but cant seem to find it.
How do I give this lace effect on my cakes? http://img4-1.realsimple.timeinc.net/images/09weddings/b-w-lace-cake_300.jpg is there any mold used? tutorial/links would be helpful
Hi there, I would use an extruder to get the hair. I have a large and dinky extruder and the dinky one has a fitting with tiny holes in which are perfect for hair. You push the fondant through and then stick the hair on in little clumps and tweak it
you can see the effect on these fairies http://www.venuscakes.com/blog/fairy-toadstool-birthday-cake/1523/
This is the type of extruder I mean - not good for larger amounts of fondant but perfect for hair

With the lace effect I would use a cutter to create the big shapes and then pipe the fine lines between shapes.
Hope this helps
If you do not have an extruder a garlic press works to create hair as well. As far as the pattern on the cake I agree, likely used cutters to make an impression on the cake, then piped the lace by hand followed by piping the swirls and flowers. You can practice doing this on wax paper or a plastic cutting board before trying it on a cake. Its a pretty look.
I agree with these ladies. Definitely have to have a steady hand for all that :)
Both the hair and the design on the cake in your attached cake can be done with an extruder. The Makin's extruder that I use has plates that allow for extruding various thicknesses of rope. You could do the cake by hand.  Rolling out ropes of different thicknesses of rope by hand, is tedious, but can be done. I did the flowers and vines on this cake that way before I got the extruder:
The garlic press is a good tool for hair.
And if you want to try much finer hair, more like fluff, you can push some fondant with a spoon through a sieve and scrape it from the bottom. Great for animal fur too.
