Highlighter Gold Dust Highlighter Metallic 3
grams #43-1402 $3.65
I ordered this from Sugarcraft and put it straight on fondarific fondant. It's the gold in my profile pic.
When I went to Michael's craft store the other day, I was looking at the "Duff" products, and noticed little bottles of airbrush colors. I have had pretty much the same question you do and found I wasn't getting the coverage I wanted with the vodka/luster dust. I bought the Duff airbrush colors gold and silver and tried them out on some fondant when I got home...and it worked out great! The only thing is it might need a couple of coats...but for me, this will work. I'm not sure you have a Michaels near you, but if you do, you might want to check it out! I think it was about $4.99 for a little bottle.
Luster dust should work. The trick is doing a couple of coats till you get the color you like and then steam it. I know that sounds weird, but a little light steaming brightens the color and "sets" it so it doesn't fade as fast and it is more vibrant. You can use a garment steamer on a light setting or I have even heard of people using a spatula and holding small decorations over a tea kettle.
Thanks all! I have not had success with the vodka/luster dust mix, but it was Wilton and maybe I didn't have the consistency right. It was a grainy streaky mess.
I think I'll give the Duff airbrush color a try. If that doesn't work I'll work more on my luster dust mix. Thanks all

Highlighter dust creates bright metallics BUT it is NOT EDIBLE--only non-toxic. It is for use only on items that will removed before serving and will not be eaten.
The airbrush colors work well. I also like using Crystal Colors (FDA approved edible dusts by sugarpaste.com) gold & silver mixed with Everclear or lemon extract.
