Question For All You Scratch Bakers
Baking By bobwonderbuns Updated 13 Mar 2012 , 1:51pm by bobwonderbuns
Hi Everyone! I have a question for all you scratch cake bakers: My repertoire of cakes includes both scratch cakes and doctored mixes. I'm SOOOOO put off by the Duncan Hines crap of late that I'm switching to all scratch cakes. Now I'm looking for a good, sturdy cake that I can carve. I'm not sure if I should use a pound cake, or a mud cake (whatever that is!) or what. What do you scratch cakers use?
Thanks in advance!!

I have never carved a cake but I know a lot of people use pound cakes.
These are my favourites:

Mud cakes are the easiest things to make. Hope you find something you like!
Wow! These are some great ideas! So now I have another question -- what exactly is a "mud cake"? I don't believe we have those here in the United States.
It's a very moist, dense cake made by melting butter, chocolate and liquid, then mixing in sugar, eggs, flour etc. Usually iced with ganache.
Lots and lots and lots of calories, and very yummy.
Mud cake is a lot like a Texas sheet cake. Hope that helps!
I don't carve so I'm no help here

Another mud cake fan here! actually that's all I ever make, even for cupcakes. They have a great shelf life as well.
