I want to make a tier tilted cake but I have never done it before what type of wedge do I put on, a styro foam one and do I cover it but then how would I secure it with the dowell rod.

You can also cut the cake at an angle, rather than use a styrofoam wedge. There is an excellent tutorial here on Cake Central for a Topsy Turvy cake.
