Let me preface this by saying hello! i'm new here!

I've decided to save money on my daughter's birthday party by making the cake.
I am making a three tier cake, but i'm not sure what flavors I should do.

I was thinking of doing a vanilla sponge cake, with raspberry filling, and buttercream frosting. I'm using pre-made fondant from Wilton to cover each tier.

I'm curious if a) these will go together well and b) if anyone has any recipes or better ideas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
Welcome to CC. I am sure you will have alot of fun making your daughters cake. Below I have copied a post from here on CC. The info below was posted by Macsmon. I will also post the link to the entire thread which is long. I hope it is not to overwhelming.

As for the fondant, have you used or tasted Wiltons fondant? I have never used it. I have always made my own. I think that I read that it is good to work with, but does not taste good. Have you thought about making your own MMF? It is easy to make. Macsmon has a MMF recipe on here which is easy and good. Maybe adding some flavor to the Wilton's?

Opps, I guess that I got a little over enthusiastic about you doing your daughters cake.
I think that vanilla cake with raspberry filling would be great. What flavor are you going to do the buttercream? Raspberry would be good to go along with the raspberry filling, but there are so many choices. What flavors does she like? When she gets ice cream or other deserts what flavors does she usually lean towards?

I forgot to put that it's my daughter's first birthday, so the cake isn't really for her so much as it is for the guests. I haven't heard very good things about the Wilton fondant, but because the cake needs to feed between 60 and 100 people (not sure what total number of guests is yet) I bought the pre made stuff to save me some time. I used it on a practice cake I did to decide whether I was capable enough with fondant, and I had zero trouble with it. I was going to do a classic buttercream frosting, and was going to try adding a flavor to the fondant. icon_smile.gif
