Im making a red velvet cake and tried a recipe i found for cream cheese frosting but its to thin!!
it called for 12oz cream cheese
1- 1 1/2 pounds podered sugar
2-3 tbs of whipping cream
1 tsp of vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups of softened butter!

can i just add more confectioners sugar to it to thicken it up? or will that make it to sweet?

Yes you can add more ps, it will be sweeter but at least the consistency will be thicker.

That recipe has a lot of fat...12 oz each of cream cheese and butter to only 1 1/2 lbs of ps. (that's 24oz fat to 24oz of sugar...not enough sugar)

The ratio seems off to me. I'd definitely add more sugar.
