I used a square cake board covered in fondant with tylose for the mortor board. I let it dry for a couple of days. I used a half ball for the cap but you could use a round cake. If you don't have a gumpaste gun roll some gumpaste or fondant with tylose into a rope. Twist two ropes together to make a cord. Then for the tassle, roll out a a rectangle. Cut long slits into to it but leaving whole at the top. Roll it together at top and it should resemble a tassle. Good luck.

Go buy Sharon Zambito's DVD Book Smarts. She has great instructions on how to do this.
