Starting small, but I am going to do it! I am going to enter the county fair! Anything goes as far as design! The main requirement is the base can not exceed 16x20. No limits on theme, colors, style etc...A decorators dream I guess BUT it kinda leaves the door wide open and sometimes its harder starting with a design from scratch with no direction! Please, help me! I want to make something this town has never seen, and I am allowed to use dummies, but I may make a carved cake which would be real cake....HELP PLEAAASE!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

Hmmm, south MS/AL.....Casino, seafood, mardi gras, Southern belles, the beach, antebellum homes, Orr pottery, Thunders Tavern...oops got carried away there icon_lol.gif The delta, the wildlife.....The gulf, so much...Maybe the mad potter of Biloxi James Orr in a southern belle dress holding a piece of his pottery filled with seafood?

Try to remember that the County Fair lasts a week........ what kind of shape will your REAL cake be at the end of a that time........ I would most certainly go with the dummies........ no rotting cake...... no melting butter cream, and no sliding fondant.......

I did this one a couple of years ago......

The canopy had real lights, and the base under the horses turned so it actually rotated........ A LOT of work, but just as much fun !

We need a like button!! I think the James Orr cake would be so cool! I just finished with a casino wedding cake design.

I really like your cake design thumbs_up.gif , I think it would do great at the contest The earlier post about how long the cake would be on display and the question of using real cake in this wonderful humidity icon_rolleyes.gif could be a real concern.

I entered a carved cake into my county fair last year. I carved the cake and then SEALED it with slightly watered down school glue (like Modge Podge for decoupage). It worked FABULOUSLY! The cake looked just as good when I picked it up as it did when I had dropped it off 10 days earlier!

And here's my blog post about it...

As an aside, there was no theme for the cake decorating contest but the organizers LOVED that I incorporated the fair theme into my cake.

I hope you have fun...I love cake decorating contests! icon_lol.gif
