What is the secret to creme cheese frosting?!?!

I've had a lot of request lately for Red Velvet Groom's cakes.
But I don't have much success getting a good smooth cake using Creme Cheese

Any tricks or secrets to be shared?

I make a quick cream cheese frosting that is really easy. (I dont have measurements, I just do it by eye) add cream cheese to mixer with whisk attachment. Add just enough powdered sugar to make it slightly sweet (i rely on the cake to make have all the sweetness, not the icing- i found it makes it too soft to work with). i add a tablespoon or so of lemon juice and some vanilla, then whisk. I add heavy cream while its whisking until it gets to the consistency i want. I also use this for filling the cake, so i make it a little thicker for the filling, then throw it back on the mixer and add a little more cream so i can use it for the frosting. good luck!

This is my favorite crusting cream cheese frosting recipe:
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup shortening
16 ounces cream cheese, softened
3 1/2 pounds powdered sugar
1 tablespoon pure vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
It is a crusting butter cream. I frost my cakes and let the crust for ten to fifteen minutes and then smooth with a paper towel.
