If I need to make black royal icing, do I need to change the recipe due to the amount of black food coloring I will need to add?

You could either sub out some of the liquid in the recipe for black coloring or just add more powdered sugar to it to get it back to the thickness you want once it's the shade you want. Or both, which is what I've done on occasion.
