I want to do something like this. How is it supported? And do you cover the bottom of the cakes that can be seen? What do you do to cover it?

Why don't you email the org. cake artist whom posted this design and ask for his/her assistance?
the cake in the photo you provided is a dummy cake and styrofoam is much lighter and easier to stack in 'dangerous' ways like that. maybe you could find someone who has done this with real cake and ask them? or ask the person who made the cake in the photo if they've done it in real cake and if they have any advice. jmo

she is showing on a small cake, you would do the same on a tier(2lyaer cake) dowel and then long dowels down center. Ive not done this before, but when i saw your cake pic, i kinda knew this is how it is done. good luck with your cake
