This is one of my all time favorite movies. How big is the cake going to be?

I am really no expert, but if the size of alien is too big and you make it with gumpaste, it will be heavy and takes time to dry.
How about molding the alien either using foam(you now the white ones, do not remember the name) or rice krispie? You can cover it with fondant then add some coloring and colored pipping gel and you have it....
HTH!

6" cake. Of course you will have to make it out of gumpaste. Good thing is a small cake!

Sorry - I totally missed the 6" cake in your first posting. How about making it out of modeling chocolate and placing on a skewer?

Thats what I say. Good thing it's a small cake!! He wants the head/face coming out of the top while the sides are like a fancy anniversary cake. Hope this makes sense.

Mareg, maybe you can make your own mold for a face with gumpaste. I know people do that. Pick up a doll/male doll? that's approximate the size you would need for the cake.

Does the head have to be higher than the top of the cake?

Wow! Well, gumpaste, modeling chocolate, or marzipan would work. As others have posted, you could also use the foam, and then cover with fondant (this would be the lightest solution). Guess you would need to find your comfort zone and decide what you are comfortable with. You have a potential challenge ahead of you. What do you think at this time that you are more comfortable working with?

I was going to suggest going into the 'naughty' section, as the alien would seem to be structurally the same as male genitalia; but it looks like you've found your answer.

Thanks 7yyrt, I had not even thought of that. Hummmm.
My friend actually said the alien dog from Planet 50 would be fine and much cuter. I have high hopes. I know what I want on my head, now to execute it!!!!
