So I'm a Brooklyn girl, born and raised, living here for (ehem!) years, therefore I'm used to New York prices, as startling as they may be to those who don't live here.

Well, I was in a very popular bakery in my area today buying some cannoli cream as a filling for my cake this weekend (my husband's family is Italian and they cannot live without it!) [Incidentally, if anyone has a good cannoli cream recipe, I'm on the hunt cause I'm tired of paying for ready-made.]

Anyhoo. I happened to look up at the wall while I was waiting and saw a sign that read: "$7 per serving for fondant cakes, prices higher depending on detail."

icon_eek.gif I don't think I've seen anyone on this site mention more than $4.50 per serving, have you?

God Bless You New York!

The only person that i've seen higher than $4.50 starting price has been in Alaska, and if i remember correctly they started at either $6 or $7, but i can't imagine how much cost up there with all the shipping it takes to get stuff there.

New York prices. Aren't they something? My office ordered 200 of these tiny cupcakes the other day, and I found out they were $70 per 100 of them. I was done with 10 of them in no time... which made one cupcake (the total of about 10 of them) be $7. Look at the size. There were 200 of them in a large pizza box.

I start at $10.00 per serving with a $500 minimum order. There are more of us.

And this does nothing but help the rest of you, especially the lowballers who are ripping themselves off.

Browsing on the internet, most serious bakeries in my area charge a minimum of $6-$7 per serving and the over the top fabulous cakers like KimmyKakes4Me are $10-$15

How many serves would say, a 6" or an 8" cake yield? You'd be paying $80 upwards for that size here in NZ, if it was beautifully decorated.

I was just looking at the website for a baker in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here's their pricing:

Wedding cakes: Wedding cakes are priced at a per-person rate ranging from $11 to $20, depending on the level of detail work and design. Smaller wedding cakes and grooms cakes are priced on a per-project basis with a $600.00 minimum. Larger parties may have the option of a smaller set-up cake with an undecorated back-up cake. The back-up cakes are priced at $6 per person.

I think the going rate around here is $5 - $7 a serving.

Well certainly no offense was meant to those who do charge $7 and up, I just had no idea since I'm a hobby baker.

It is very interesting though and certainly something to consider seriously when baking professionally. You don't want to overcharge, but you certainly don't want to undercharge and screw yourself either.

And it's not surprising that those living in Cali would charge prices similar to NY or any big city for that matter.

Happy Caking!

I know where I am from originally in NJ that fondant cakes at good bakeries are $9 a slice. I think 7 a slice in NY is really reasonable actually.

Wow! In the small town area of WA that I live in most wedding cakes w/ fondant start at 4.00 per serving. And I have some brides who think that is too much! Little do they realize the time and costs that go into making cakes that they want.

I think that CA & NY probably have more costs in running a business there + most large cities can charge more. I think it is expected. I would expect to pay more if I went into Seattle for cake. I am envious of them! (However, I wouldn't give up my small town life for anything. Didn't grow up here but don't want to leave.)

Another note, I was in No. Cal this last spring and a cupcake that we would pay 2.75 - 3.00 for was selling for 3.00 - 3.50 for there.
