I want to make a pioneer wagon cake, but I'm trying to figure out how to make the top. I'll make the wagon part out of chocolate cake, and the fabric covering will be fondant, but how do I make the "ribs" of the covering to drape the fondant over? I'd prefer it to be all edible, but I'm afraid if I make them out of gumpaste or fondant, they'll be too fragile. Any ideas?

how about NO ribs at all.

instead create a form in the shape and size that the top has to be.

lay ribs of wire or clay or whatever on it.

cover in plastic wrap.

lay fondant on and smooth down to get the bumps of the ribs

leave to harden.

remove from form and it will have the ribbed look.
