I have a family member who has a birthday coming up in two weeks. I want to make his cake but every time I make one my family complains about the sweetness of the frosting. I don't want to use stabalized whipped cream. I went to a party recenlty and the cake was delicious the host said she was told it was some sort of buttercream but this was not sweet at all. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I like swiss meringue butter cream. Not nearly as sweet, tastes good and can easily be flavored. My favorites are khalua flavored and peanut butter flavored (if making a chocolate cake).

A dash of salt with counteract the sweetness in most frostings.

smbc and imbc , both are delicious in many flavors. The mock b/c(recipes on this site, and all over the internet) is also delicious and not too sweet. i think you will be pleased using any of these. hth
