appears to be a way to make a box mix make more batter than if you use the box instructions.

I believe it just makes a bigger batch. thats my understanding someone please correct me if I am wrong.

The additions also make the cake moister and more dense.

It is a moister cake that is also good for carving. It makes more cups of batter because you need to add lots of stuff to the cake mix, but it's totally worth it! The only cake I make!!
