Just wondering if I were to make the basic buttercream icing that's on this site, Do I need to put something in it to color it white. I need a white cake for this weekend. As you can tell I am a newbie. icon_smile.gif

Thanks

I'm not sure of the ingredients on this site for the basic bc, but I've used wilton in my earlier days and I'm sure its about the same. It will be white unless you use colored crisco or butter. When I did use the wilton recipe it called for crisco and unless I used the white it would turn out with a slight yellowish tint from the shortening.

You can also add Americolor bright white or wilton has a whitener, too.

They use different substances to give you the white, and I'm not sure what the difference is in their effectiveness.

If it isn't white you can add just a tiny (and I do mean tiny) bit of violet color to whiten it. Violet cancels yellow.
