Help - Tiered Cake!

Hi.

I want to make a 2 tiered cake; the plan is to wrap fondant in the shape of christmas trees to the plastic supports which hold up the top tier, as the member who did this cake below.

Can anyone advise what sort of supports these are, and would the top tier have simply rested on these supports without any firm attachments?

I would assume there were plastic support colums inside those ducks and there is a separator plate under the top tier.
