I'd like to make some sparkly snowflakes out of royal icing or chocolate melts. I'm having trouble with the edible glitter I bought, though. I tried sprinkling it on some royal icing, but it isn't sticking well and it's just not very shimmery. Is it possible to mix the edible glitter with the icing before I pipe it to make it shiny? I would really appreciate any suggestions you may have.

When working with royal icing you have to move fast in order for the glitter to adhere properly. If it dries too quickly for you, try going over it with a damp to wet paintbrush dipped in water than sprinkle with glitter. You could also wait until the whole thing dries, pint over it with some piping gel and then sprinkle with glitter.
