I seen the topic but didn't click on it...'cause I like them both for different reasons.
I like them both too! I like both shows also but I do think that Buddy's show is more not real if you know what I mean. I think it is scripted as Duff's does not. But I do think they are both talented and like them.
Thanks for posting the link - I just read the article. At the end you can vote for who you like best. But it kind of seemed to me like the person who wrote the article was pulling for Ace of Cakes (which is fine) but normally you want to be unbiased in a report.
Just my thoughts.
Ace of Cakes hands down!
I didn't really read the article to be biased towards Ace of Cakes..but of course, I prefer that show over Cake Boss so maybe that is why.
For me, Cake Boss is too contrived...seems scripted...like they set stuff up just for the camera. I don't feel like they show as much of the process as Ace of Cakes. Plus there is too much yelling. Ace of Cakes is more natural and more chill as the article describes.
The only thing I will say about Ace of Cakes is that sometimes their "cakes" aren't really cake...like the Macy's cake they did. It was all wood covered with fondant. Seems like you could have worked cake into that design better somehow.
I still watch Cake Boss though..I'll watch any cake show I can find!
I would have to say Duff hands down! I LOVE his personality! He's serious about this business and what he does, but at the end of the day he knows it's just cake. And it just seems like he wants to have more of a fun time.
Buddy seems like he always has to prove something or need the attention. I get the need/want to prove something, but his arrogance is not something I care for.
Ace of cakes makes mostly board and wood ........Buddy is mostly cake...........no contest its cake boss all the way
I would want a taste test
I like can't decide both are so great. Though I haven't seen Duff decorate that much... why is that? Must be the editing.
Without question: Duff!!! They both do amazing cakes, but I love Duff's attitude and that he seems to really love what he does. He also treats his staff with a great deal of respect. To me, Buddy just doesn't seem to really enjoy what he does, and isn't very respectful to his staff.
When the time finally arrives that I have my own shop, it is the environment at Charm City Cakes that I want to emulate!
Ace of cakes makes mostly board and wood ........Buddy is mostly cake...........no contest its all the way
BUT have you noticed that lately Buddy is using more wood and different things also???
Me? I love both of 'em! I'll take "Cake Porn" whenever I can get it!!
I already posted my views on Duff, but a mod deleted the thread.

inquiring minds...
want to know
What I posted is public knowledge. Duff was pastry Chef at the French Laundry. He couldn't handle the stress, never showed up the next day for work the next day. Then he ran back to Daddy crying with his hand out. Pops bankrolled the cake place, now he's famous. His Dad owns a chain of gyms in the Baltimore area.

I like Duff's personality but the rest of his staff act like they are on valium. I am not a fondant/3D guru, so I prefer Buddy's cakes. But I don't like how his family/staff tend to show off for the camera. I would like Duff to walk in one day and had all his "artists" a bag of buttercream! Bet they me moving and talking a bit faster! They are two good shows..with two different personalities and styles. I watch both.
I am with SS - I want a cake tasting!
IMO - both shops have a lot of talent. In the "more refined" category, I don't think that was a fair comment - Buddy's shop does a lot of clean, excellent work - more intricately detailed than Duff's.
They both have serious talents under their roofs.....just different.
If I could get my Daddy (or anyone else for that matter) to bankroll me a shop, I'd gladly let 'em do it. Reckon some folk work better under different circumstances than others, eh?
Buddy's crew does a wide variety of decorated stuff ...of which(recalling the cookie cake episode of AOC) Duff and his crew choose not to work with. Both have an awesome group of people working with them to help them shine brightly.
What would be interesting is to see Buddy working in CCC for a SOLID week and Duff to do the same at Carlos Bakery.
Was it the stress of the job or the attitude of the people that worked with him....a cold, distant atmosphere with animosity filling the air like a heavy fog...choking ya like the stinch of Union Camp while traveling on a Summer night through the outskirts of Savannah....
I think both cake artists are AWESOME and do great work. I actually like both shows, but for different reasons:
AOC: I LOVE HIS DECORATORS, they are awesome. However, I sometimes don't like how they rely on "extra stuff" (wood, plastic, etc.) Like, last night, they used a piece of wood for the handle on a guitar. Now, I get them using the wood, so the handle could stand up like a real guitar, but, I was a little baffled when they drilled the wood handle into part of the cake.
CB: I have learned SEVERAL techniques from this show and I absolutely love his work (except for the eyes on the bunny) That one sister, however, would not be missed by me if she got kicked off the show. Everybody else, I like.
I'd line up behind Buddy any day. Some of their shows do seem ridiculously scripted, but there is no doubt in my mind that those people work hard every single day. You won't see them clowning around during down-time because that shop has no down-time. I'm also a big fan of family businesses (no matter how crazy that family is).
I do enjoy both shows though; they are a great inspiration to me!
While both shows are good, just on technical merit I would have to give it to Buddy. His piping skills are way better than Duff's and he is more an "all around pastry" chef. I doubt Duff could make a french horn or other pastries. You can tell he grew up in a bakery. And honestly how fast is Buddy? I wish in my dreams for his speed!
I do believe the more artistic crew however is Duff's. His friends I think are a lot more talented than he is, but he's got the personality.

DITTO!!!!
I pretty much stopped watching Duff, his show to me was so sloooooow, at times it was like watching paint dry Now Buddy, his show moves so fast that sometimes I have to check the clock to see if it has been an hour already.. His show totally holds my attention... Way back when I use to watch Ace, there was so many times when Duff (staff) would do a cake and I thought they should have added more to it or the figures looked like they were made in kindergarden playdough class..lol.. I have seen way better work here on CC.. Wanted to add that I do love Mary ALice..
Love looking at Buddy's wedding cakes. On top of the show he still has to run a NEW YORK bakery that has been open for many years, oh and its open to the public..
Also I don't think that was a fair article!!! But I voted anyway. lol.. Come on Buddy fans we need more votes!! Which cake show do you prefer?
Ace of Cakes 13507 (55.3%)
Cake Boss 10914 (44.7%)
I love to watch both shows. Different personalities, different techniques, different styles.
I just realized I never see any actual baking on Ace of Cakes--who does that? Where are the mixers and ovens? Is there another area or staff for baking? Or do I just not see it?
Okay there are two more things I would change about Duff's crew: maybe give them a good scrubbing? They all look like they've just rolled out of bed and I hate seeing women's hair in their eyes and hanging down all around their faces. I also would like to give them a double shot of espresso. Just to wake them up a little bit.
Their artistic abilities are incredible though.
CAKE BOSS all the way!! I like Duff, don't get me wrong, but I just don't like his show. You never learn anything from his show!! And I agree with another poster, sometimes its like watching paint dry!! ARGGGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!
If you don't come from or haven't been around a really big LOUD Italian family its hard to understand that its not disrespect thats just the way we talk.
I have learned several things from Buddy - especially doing a roof with poppy seeds - SO SMART!!!!
Cutthecake- theres is one guy on AOC who is their baker. I forget his name but he has glasses and hes in the back corner where they have the baking area set up. As for I like better.. I guess id say Im more entertained and wowed by Duffs cakes but Buddy is great too.
I think they are just VERY different styles that are sort of hard to compare. Buddy is old school and does all pastries where as duff prides himself on being new with different techniques with power tools etc. I think Buddys people are amazing and more realistic, and then Duffs people are cute and cartoony, Just depends on what you want I guess. Another thing with Buddy for me is the cakes are very hit or miss. I either LOVE or really not feeling it. lol like the eatser bunny cake. Bunny was crazy looking and it was sort of boring, just eggs laid out, no creativity
But bottom line they both do things i cant do and wish i could so i admire them both!
Thanks, whit6. Guess I'm too busy looking at the cakes to notice the baker guy in the back. I'll have to look harder!
But they don't ever mention the flavor of the cake, do they? The baking seems inconsequential somehow.
After I read the article I left without voting because I can't pick one over the other. But after reading posts here and learning that Duff is in the lead I went back to vote for Cake Boss.
I love how Buddy shares some tricks and actually explains how he makes some of the things. On Ace of Cakes we have to learn on our own, most of the time. But then for "normal" viewers I can see why they think Duff is more "cool" (plus no annoying sisters...)
I was wondering the reasoning as to why Duff never shows up at any of the "cake convention" stuff to do demos etc. like other top name cake folks......(even Buddy attends the RBA stuff)
Yes, I have always been bothered why nobody on TV wears hair nets or something too keep the hair away. Especially with long hair. I wonder if any clients of them ever gets any hair in their cakes...
I like Duff's personality but the rest of his staff act like they are on valium.
Herbal Valium if you ask me...lol
