I am taking the wilton cake decorating classes at Michaels and I am getting ready to make the rainbow star tip cake and i am wondering is it one 8 inch cake that is cut so it has two layers or is it 2- 8 inch cakes cut so it has 4 layers can anyone help me please

For the class you can do it how ever you want. If you only want a small cake around, then just do the single layer. If you want a larger cake, then you can two layers. You can torte (cut in half) the layers if you want to, or not.

The important thing is that you have a cake that is iced to decorate. How big/tall is up to you. icon_smile.gif

I have noticed in all the Wilton classes I have take that people just kind of do whatever they want.

I agree - the height of the cake is up to you. Unless your instructor specifically asked you to bring it a certain way.
