Is it possible to make a black forest cake or an adaptation there of that could be used as a decoratable cake?

Why not?? Just make a very dry buttercream dam, then ganache and cherries swirl. Just make sure you start your swirl with the ganache so it is on the outside(no leaks from cherries) then I'd rest it to allow it to settle.
