When using a larger cake board for the bottom do you still affix the cake to a smaller board and then put it on top of the larger one. . or do you just set the cake directly on the larger board?

For instance. . .my bottom tier is a 10" cake so should I just decorate the cake and set it directly on the 12" board or should I place it on a 10" board first then put the tier on the 12" board?

The purpose for the 12" board is the girl doesn't have a cake stand, so I was just going to use a larger board and put a ribbon around the edges to match the cake.

I hope that made sense. . LOL

Thanks!

I always place my cakes on the same size board first and then at the last minute I put it on the larger board (with some RI for glue). It helps keep the 'presentation board' clean.

I like to finish my wedding cake boards with fondant, so I always put the actual cake on a foil covered board, then on the main board. I glue it down with a little royal icing.
