I am seriously thinking about starting an online business selling gumpaste/fondant cake toppers and figures. I know its a lot of work, but I love doing it. I haven't posted pics of my stuff yet bc I am trying to decide if its what I want to do. What are your opinions? I don't want to invest in a website if this is not a great idea. I would love some thoughts/advice.

Thanks & God Bless

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that there are people here that outsource figures, flowers and such. I personally would have no problem buying flowers as long as I could put my touch with color to themicon_wink.gif

I know there are a lot of people who TEACH others how to make the figures, but I haven't found many sites that actually sell them. I could be wrong, so please correct me if I am.

You don't have to spend a cent on a website if you make it with Microsoft Office Small Business. web site builder. Your domain name is free as well as the design templates. There is also no monthly fee to place the site on the internet.

Making toppers and figures is a great idea. I only make faux wedding cakes and I am the only person in my area that does them. It is great to try something different although sometimes it take a while to catch on.

Thanks for the idea of the free website. I still have not found the sites that sell them. I definitely don't want to step on anyone's toes. I just thought it would be something neat to provide for those who would like to buy them.

I think the number one thing you need to figure out is how you would ship them first. I have shipped gumpaste flowers before and it was very difficult to package them so they were snug in the box but not banging around each other. The simple stuff is easier, but larger things like figurines and big flowers such as peonies are tough. What if an arm falls off, or hair breaks... ya know?

There are a few websites that sell polymer clay toppers that are personalized, and they are NOT cheap. Do a google search for custom toppers. I'll bet you'd get some business, but not a tremendous amount unless you do more advertising. Try to link your website to as many others as you can to get a lot of exposure.

Just set up an Etsy Shop. It's perfect for what you're wanting to do.

Wow! Thanks for all the input guys. My husband will figure out the shipping. He is a pro at that stuff. But I will look into the Etsy shop. You guys are the greatest! icon_smile.gif

Can you post a link to your etsy shop? I'd love to be able to refer my brides there if they are looking for something like that, as I don't have the time to make them myself.

Sure. I just didn't know if it was allowed on the board. I didn't want to break the rules. icon_smile.gif

I do custom work also. Right now I am offering free shipping on all figures.
