Hello all,

I'm a newbie!! I'm currently working on a 70th year birthday cake for a friend and need some help.

I'm making a cake with photographs on it. Each photo will be framed. I would like to trim the frames with gold piping. Can anyone tell me how to make gold frosting?

Thanks bunches!!

Americolor makes a gold gel paste. But according to my color chart you can use
10 parts lemon yellow
3 parts orange
1 part red

If you want a metallic gold, you can make yellow frosting and then apply some luster dust with a paintbrush, or if you're using royal icing or fondant, mix the luster dust with vodka or clear vanilla extract and paint it on. You can also use Americolor's gold airbrush color, just painted on with a paintbrush, if you've got a cake supply store near you that carries it.

I'm with Texas Rose on this one my personal choice would be lustre mixed with vodka and painted on - gives a solid paint look as opposed to sparkle which you get using the dust on its own.
