I am making stars out of 50/50 fondant and gumpaste. Then attaching them to wire spirals. If I want to paint them silver should I let them dry first, paint and attach to wire? Or can I cut them out and immediately paint them silver?

Definitely let them completely dry before painting, you'll have a mess as well as a longer dry time if you paint them right away.

I always start with gray 50/50 paste, silver is much richer when painting over and if you miss a small spot, doesn't show thru like the white stars. Add to wires first, dry, then paint. lol

The way i did the starts on my football cake was to cut them out of yellow gumpaste and stick them on the "curled" wires with a little tylose glue on the end of the wire. Hung them till dry then painted them with yellow luster dust mixed with a little lemon extract.

What do you use for the wire?

Thanks for the help. I am using 50/50 mix and they will be gray to start with. Hopefully I can pull off great looking stars for my niece's cake.
