A Thread For All Uk Bakers!!

AAw bless him! I've got one of those too, I said something about the washing up fairy being busy one day and he was a bit put out so he's now The Washing Up Warrier!
AHaha Maisie that really made me giggle. I wish I had a washing up fairy/warrior! I must admit though, my boyfriend loves to cook (which is a good job because I'm hopeless at making 'real' food) but when he does he seems to manage to use every single pot and pan in the kitchen so I always refuse to wash up after him. So fair is fair I suppose!
AYes they are funny bless em. Glad I gave you a giggle, off to bed now. G'nite all.
Morning ladies - wow! Impressive cakes Nannycook - I am loving them. Sadly my foray into cupcakes made me super frazzled last night. They are finished but not so happy with them - however, my mum won't mind - she's always been a great "customer". When my phone has charged will take (reluctant) snaps and post them - but, safe to say, we learnt a lot about blue chocolate last night! Possibly the main thing we learnt was not to do it at nearly midnight! Lol.
AKathy I thought midnight was the best time to decorate cakes! I bet they're lovely, can't wait to see them. I got up early this morning to decorate mine and I should've stayed in bed cos I'm not getting anywhere! I'm having trouble with these letter cutters, can't get them to come out without tearing. Can anyone help me?
ALooking forward to the pics Kathy, am sure they are fab!
Maisie not sure what cutters those are, but with mine, I use flower or modelling paste rolled as thin as I can, rolled onto icing sugar. Then leave it a few minutes to dry the top a bit and stop it sticking to the cutter when I press them on.
Then press the cutters down nice and firmly, then 'scrub' it round on the cutting board to make sure you get a clean cut. It does take a few goes to get the hang but you'll get there :)
AI did it! Do they look scruffy?
AThey look good!
I def think the key is letting the icing dry a little before you cut, makes it a bit more stable and gives a cleaner edge :)
I also let them dry once cut on a flat surface (foam pad normally) then I stick them to whatever I'm making as well, again allows them to firm up before handling when placing on cakes etc - I end up squidging them otherwise! :)
AThanks Mel. :-) they're a bit wonky but I'm just pleased they actually came out in one piece! I did let the gum paste dry a bit, I should've made them sooner really so didn't have time to let them dry after they'd been cut. And, if you're reading this natt, thanks for telling me my old letters were ugly, I wouldn't have kept trying with these otherwise! :-D

You're welcome? Lol! I started off with the same issue, using the same cutters you were using and having to find cutters I was happy using, practice makes perfect and they already look so much better!
AThey look great Maisie. :) With those cutters I also use flower paste rolled quite thinly. Once you cut the letter, you have to flick it. When it comes out let it to dry. Then you can handle them easily. :)
AThankyou both.:-) I really am so pleased I've managed to do it. Just cos I've done it once, doesn't mean it'll go well next time tho, it's two steps forward, three steps back with me! [IMG][/IMG]
AOops, only one uploaded!

Phew I finally finished this cake - just in time for my friends birthday this evening. Other than everything taking forever to dry it was fairly simple the end. Think I'm pleased with the result too, just a few 'blemishes' I can see that are a little annoying but overall I'm happy!
AThat's fantastic sugarluva!
Maisie, I love the cupcakes! I'm now off to use left over buttercream to make my mothers day cupcakes!
AThanks natt and bashini!
I have left over buttercream for mothers day cupcakes too haha - just hoping I have enough time tomorrow...
AThanks natt.:-) Sugarluva that cake is brilliant! I wouldn't even know where to begin with something like that! I've just delivered my cupcakes, they (my mother and my auntie) loved them (they're easily pleased bless!) I'm looking forward to seeing everyone elses mothers day cupcakes now. (And bashini's mysterious creation!) I'm attempting my first mud cake later, that's gona be fun!
ADayscake, they must of been a huge amount of work, everythings so tiny, very pretty, well done to you.
Maisie, are you pleased with the cutters? They do make cupcakes look so good.
AKathy, your cupcakes are beautiful!!!! Never tried anything like that before.
My mum is not in this country. So I won't be able to do anything for her. But will call and wish her tomorrow!!!! :)
maisie, one more sleep and will post it!!! :D
AAw Kathy they're soooo gorgeous! I wanna make those when I grow up! Yes nanny, really pleased, I'm going to get a lot of use out of them I think. I've ordered some daisy cutters too, only a pound from Hong Kong, can't wait for them to come.
Thank you all for your lovely comments. I feel a bit unworthy. I can see loads of errors but the good thing is I am back in the saddle so to speak! :)
AI've never managed to be in the saddle in the first place, I'm just clinging on to the pedals! They're fab Kathy, I bet it feels like you've never been away.
