I am trying to make a checkerboard cake with white cake mix that i am dying purple with food coloring. Then using a yellow cake mix for the other part. Well, my purple part of the checkerboard is coming out way too moist and falling apart so I can't get the desired checkerboard affect. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem??

Is there a reason you need to use two different cake mixes? I would suggest using just one type of cake mix if possible. cool idea though, it never occured to me color the mix to make the checkerboard. I've always done with chocolate and vanilla.
