I am doing a cake for an army theme bridal shower and have to make a cake to look like a camouflage garter.

Is it possible to cover a cake in buttercream and only add scrunched fondant to the outside of the cake so it looks like fabric?

Also, if I paint the fondant to look like camouflage, do I start off with un-colored fondant or can I have it tinted green and paint the other colors on?

This is what the cake needs to look like...

I would have the fondant be the lightest color (looks like beige in the photo) and then paint the other colors on. If you have the fondant overlap onto the top just a bit, it should be fine.
