You know, before I got into baking and decorating again, I would be a happy camper if someone offered me a slice, but now that I'm baking and decorating myself I find that I really don't want to eat cake. I love baking and decorating them, I just don't want to eat them. Anyone else feel this way?

I also use to love cake, now I have no desire to eat it.
I think you work to hard on it and then don't want to destroy it.

Is that question a joke!?! icon_lol.gif I have never met a slice of cake that was a stranger to me haha! I know what you mean though. I recently made my DH's birthday cake and a friends wedding cake all in the same weekend and it was a bit much! But thankfully I recovered very soon and was able to eat cake again!! icon_smile.gif

Hi Debbi!!

I generally don't eat cake either!! Never really have been a cake eater, just love the way they look!! I enjoy decorating them and feel a great deal of accomplishment when I do them, especially the big ones!! If I happen to go to a reception where I made the cake I do usually have a piece just to see how it is!!

I agree, never been a time that I don't want to try my cakes, cookies, candies, you name it. I have a major sweet tooth. Have to make sure it really is good for my customers.

I agree with you, Dodibug! I love cake, icing, pretty much anything in the dessert/sweets category, especially if it is chocolate! However, I do find that when I make something, dessert, dinner, whatever, it is not as good as when someone else makes it. Why is that? Then I drive my husband crazy asking him if he is sure it is good, even when he has told me ten times that it is.

I eat my cake if I'm at the party. I also eat other people cakes also, just to see how they taste and the icing. Especially if the cake came from a bakery. I think of it as tasting the competition. The only thing I hate is when I'm at a party people always assume I will cut the cake.

One of my "cravings" from time to time was cake with BC icing. Now that I'm surrounded by it, I find I don't crave it..so good thing is I don't taste (more than is necessary) the things I am making..also big plus is when I am somewhere else and cake is offered (which is often from a grocery store), I have no desire for it, because now my taste buds want a higher quality cake and icing and the store cake just doesn't cut iticon_smile.gif LOL

People do that to me, too! I don't want to be responsible for cutting it! I already made it, now they want me to cut it too?

aunt-judy Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 6:01pm

i'll eat cake, but i generally don't touch frosting unless it's been made by me, in which case it's likely mousse or ganache, and not buttercream. however, other people are always so apologetic when it's a cake they've baked, "i'm sure you could do so much better", which irks me, cause i don't feel that way at all, and i'm always really appreciative of other people's work. mostly, people don't want me to tell them what the nasty grocery-store cake they've bought is made from, as i can usually tell by sight and taste what's gone into the cake and how it was made.

i love eating decorated cookies. i'm super-lazy when it comes to dough-making so at christmastime i usually use ready-make dough for gingerbread and butter cookies and fancy them up with my own royal icing.

i'm fine being expected to cut a cake -- most people are very timid and too-careful around cakes and as a result they do a lousy, messy job cutting, and i'm a little compulsive and like to do it as neatly as possible.

NO I WON'T DO IT!!!! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

bubblezmom Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 6:43pm

I love cake! icon_biggrin.gif My love of cake is what inspires me to try different recipes.

momoftwogirls Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 6:50pm

I am so glad this question was asked debbie!

I really do love cake, icing, and anything chocolate. But recently I just got into baking cakes and I don't like icing as much as I use to. I still love cake and chocolate!

I am in the wilton course currently and we have to bring in a cake each week. I don't know what to do with the cakes.
I can only eat so much cake!! and this is way over my limit.

GinaJuarez Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 6:52pm

I will still eat cake, but I'm not as compelled to go back for seconds. I still like to taste my creations whenever possible. Before, I would eat HUGE slice of cake, now a little peice will do fine. (With the except of the ding dong cake a made over the weekend....could have at the whole darn thing!)

Maryanne Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 6:54pm

When I was young I had a major sweet tooth, but now find that anything bigger than the "Wilton-sized" slice is too much. I made a two-tier practice cake this weekend (10" and 6") and brought it in to work; after nibbling at the scraps this weekend, I'd had my fill and didn't want any when it was time to eat an actual piece. As for the frosting, if I don't take that first taste, I'm fine - but the more I taste, the more I'm inclined to eat. Hopefully I'll get past that too -- it sure makes the waistband tight, in a hurry! icon_cry.gif

peacockplace Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 6:58pm

That's so funny you guys. Why does everyone assume that the cake maker should cut the cake? I hate doing it!!! It's not beause I don't want to destroy it... I'm just not one of those people who do it well, you know nice perfect pieces. I'd much rather have someone else do it. I love watching people slice into one of my cakes! People say "oh, I bet you hate to see that cut" But it's just the opposite. I always find myself saying "When are they going to cut the cake?"

As for eating cake, I love it!!! Way too much. This was my first year doing lots of cakes and I gained 10 pounds! Well, I just finished loosing the ten, and now I'm pregnant! I'm trying to cut back cake tasting and frosting eating! LOL

fytar Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:14pm

I love cake! My husband is sick of it. I have to beg him just to try a tiny, tiny little taste of icing just to get his opinion on it. I have a hard time not eating it when it is just sitting there on the counter waiting for me when I get home from work. I have put on 12 pounds since I started baking and decorating in March! I have to stop this madness...I just can't help taste-testing my icings and cakes!!

bigboots Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:20pm

Don't eat cake with icing, but still LOVE plain
cake icon_biggrin.gif

cybourg Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:23pm

I have never been a big cake eater to begin with. But since I am new to this cake decorating, I want to try different recipes so of course I have to taste them. And I tried the cake balls, big mistake, I love those! My husband works at a prison so I do a practice cake, cut a piece to taste, then send it to work with him. His co-workers are now asking when I am going to make another cake. icon_smile.gif
When I was taking the Wilton courses I gave the neighbors lots of cake. Everyone around here is sick of cake.

Chefgirl Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:29pm

My husband is definitely NOT sick of cake. A couple of our friends came over this weekend for a tasting for their wedding cake and he thought he should be included in the tasting! It was funny. He wants me to do another tasting for them, only because he'll get more cake!
I always like to taste whatever I'm making. I have gotten much better about tasting too much, but I do love sweets. And, unfortunately, it shows.

aunt-judy Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:30pm

how ironic. i never gained an ounce working in bakeries (it's very physically demanding work) all the while nibbling on broken almond dacqoise with caramel, broken cheesecakes, and all sorts of fattening things...on the other hand, 5+ years of office work sitting on my ever-expanding butt packed on 25 pounds ouch.gif which i am slowly trying to whittle off...maybe i should go back to baking!

i read somewhere that the trick is to avoid the icing, and just eat the cake...kind of like having just the burger without the fries.

mvucic Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:31pm

I really SHOUDN'T eat cake, but I do! Love it! I don't make them too often since my DH absolutely hates sweets (I know, definitely not a good thing).

Aunt-Judy, so true. I'm neurotic when it comes to cake cutting. Gotta have that pitcher of hot water and a cloth to wipe the blade for each slice! I don't like seeing crumbs over the top of my cake! icon_smile.gif

aupekkle Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:36pm

This reminded me of what my Wilton instructor told us when we first started the Course 1 class. She told us that we would get sick of cake and icing by the time we finished all 3 courses.

Well, that didn't happen to me. I LOVE cake and especially sweet frosting. Even after a week where I had made 3 cakes, I still loved eating the cake and frosting. I guess I'm a diehard when it comes to this stuff. Luckily I'm doing karate and weight training, so this lets me eat cake without gaining weight.

delectablecakes Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:44pm

Interestingly enough...I LOVE cake, but will not eat any cake or pie that I have made. People think I'm so strange, but after baking it and decorating it, I just can't bring myself to eat it...I just don't want to look at it anymore! I will eat other peoples desserts, though...without a problem!

gdixoncakes Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 7:59pm

Nothing calls my name more than a good cake sitting in my refridgerator or on my counter. So, I try to keep the ones that stay here to a minimum. Leftover icing also has the occasion to call my name. Again, I try to minimize that. Luckily, I can't stand cheesecake or carrot cake so when I make those, I'm fine. I've had two kids in the last 3-1/2 years and I still need to lose 20 pounds, so I'm desperately trying to do that. At 82 years old, my mom is on the verge of being diabetic. So, if I ever find out I'm diabetic, it will really bum me out.

I AGREE WITH THE THREE OF YOU. EVEN IF I DIDN'T MAKE THE CAKE I STILL HAVE TO CUT IT. WHAT IS WITH THAT?

melissablack Posted 16 Aug 2005 , 8:05pm

I love my own cake! I never make it if I don't have a reason though, so I haven't gained any weight from making cakes. I never eat bakery cakes, if I am at a function and there one from a specialty bakery or someone else has made it I will try it, to test the competition, lol, but to me a cheap bakery cake is a waste of calories, lol.

I agree, I love quality desserts. I am pretty good at resisting cheap bakery cakes and desserts, though. No need to waste calories!
