I blew up another mixer tonight. This makes about 6 since May. I don't have a kitchen aid. I am hoping to get one for Christmas. But since I have 2 cakes due this weekend, I had to drive to the local super store and buy yet another $20 mixer. icon_redface.gif
Not to mention I burned a cake earlier this evening. icon_rolleyes.gif It's gonna be one of those days.

Oh, I'm so sorry that happened. I blew out a couple too, until my mom got me my KA last year. I hope you get one for Christmas...it really will make everything easier. Good luck with your cakes this weekend!

Beth...Sorry you're having such a bad day. Yes, you need a KA...I love mine.

Be sure to check Amazon ever so often because a lot of times, you can find them on sale there. Usually when someone from CC spots the sale, they send out a message to annouce it. Also, try to watch the Kohls ad. They always put theirs on sale around this time of year because they know its "baking season". icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for the suggestions and the well wishes. Right now I am not too stressed (usually I would be about ready to pull my hair out right now). One of the cakes doesn't have to be done until Sunday morning and the other just sometime tomorrow. So it's not too bad.
As for the kitchen aid....I have it at the top of my Christmas list and have already decided if I don't get one for Christmas, I am going to buy one out of my emergency fund! A total no-no, but I NEED one. icon_smile.gif Isn't that an emergency???

If you feel you can afford a bit more, you can sometimes find the KA Professional 600s on e-bay. I got a brand new one that way and even after paying shipping, I saved a good $100 off of the department store price. icon_cool.gif

Try going on the KA website. They have refurbished KA's at a great price. I had one lined up for myself, but my husband got me one as a gift. He was very insulted that I wanted the other one from the KA site. They have great prices and the give you a warrenty with it. You may have to hunt around for the refurbished KA. I still want the color and wattage that I was looking at.

Good luck

beth2027, I so feel your pain, as I too lost my mixer on Friday night in the middle of a 4 tier wedding cake that had to be delivered & set up Friday night. I almost burst into tears when the smoke started pouring out of the thing. I NEED a KA so very, very badly. The cake I was working on was for my best friend, who married my brother-in-law on Saturday. The cake turned out great despite the many, many issues I ran into, and at 1am on Saturday morning as I stood in the reception hall gluing gumpaste leaves to the cake with royal icing that I had mixed by hand after my mixer went up in smoke, I informed my friend that I would be expecting a KA from "santa" lol She said she thought maybe she could try to arrange that with santa for me. So, yeah. I am gonna get my KA for Christmas. LOL I think I deserve it since the cake was a gift from me, and I was also the Maid of Honor (or matron I suppose). I have the best family!

If you have Bed Bath and Beyond or a Linen's and Things, you might check there too. They send out 20% off coupons all the time. And LNT is going out of business, so they might have them marked down! icon_smile.gif Good luck!

This year I am asking santa for an extra bowl and some attachments for mine!

FromScratch Posted 20 Oct 2008 , 3:12am

If you look at it like this.. buying a KA will end up saving you money since you won't have to buy 6 of them (and from the sounds of it probably a few more before you get your KA).. it makes the investment seem less daunting.

Definitely look into the refurbed ones.. they are a great deal. icon_smile.gif

projectqueen Posted 20 Oct 2008 , 2:18pm

Yes, keep checking on Amazon. I got my KA Artisan brand new on there for $179 with free shipping. A few days later when I checked it was about $299. Sometimes they have a specific color on sale. Just keep checking...

beth2027 Posted 20 Oct 2008 , 3:21pm

I talked to my mom the other night and she said she's gonna try to get together with my dad and buy me one for Christmas this year. I'm excited. At this point, I need one because, like you said, I've spent that much on cheap mixers that keep blowing up. icon_smile.gif

kellymarie Posted 20 Oct 2008 , 3:50pm

I've had the same issues with cheap mixers, after my refurbished KA bit the dust. I went out and bought a $100 7 speed KA hand mixer and i love it! You might want to use that 20% coupon for LNT (they send them by email if you sign up online) and keep it as a back up. That way you have a nice handmixer and hopefully a stand mixer at christmas!

beth2027 Posted 20 Oct 2008 , 7:11pm

Thanks kellymarie! I have thought about buying KA hand mixer, but haven't ever found one cheap enough. I'll check out the sales. Thanks.

tonicake Posted 21 Oct 2008 , 5:22pm

Sounds like you most certainly need a KA. I have two - one for my cakes and the larger I use for my icings. I rarely use a hand mixer for any of my baking these days. Actually, I use it to mix my cake release and there are no problems with that.

Good luck on your mixing until a KA drops in your kitchen!

zoomzone Posted 22 Oct 2008 , 2:05am

I have a cuisinart hand mixer that carried me until I got my KA 600 Pro from costco. The cuisinart has held up very well and was a world away from the $20 mixers. But I LOVE my KA- no comparison there. Good luck to you!
One thing to be aware of is the KA's have different motors (wattage) The higher the watts the more powerful and less bogged down the mixer.

beth2027 Posted 22 Oct 2008 , 2:16am

The wattage on the Kitchen Aid mixers is something I have been looking at. My new "cheap" hand mixer has 275 watts, which is better than most of the hand mixers, so I think it might last a little longer. But I'd like to get the highest wattage possible.

That is my thought. 7 mixers at $20 bucks each is $140 that you could have used towards a KA or even a KA hand mixer.

I'd seriously look into the KA hand mixers. Yes they are more costly but they last a long time. I had the 5 speed that I used for bc and royal icing as well as everything else for 10 years. It was $50, but I still got 10 years use out of it, and would still be using it if I hadn't had a power surge in the house from a fallen power line in my driveway. Poor mixer was plugged in at the time. I currently have the 9 speed and love it! icon_smile.gif

calynmom Posted 22 Oct 2008 , 3:41am

My husband finally got me a kitchen aid mixer last year and I don't know what I would do without it.

The others are right. It is worth it to put money towards one now instead of a bunch of others. With christmas coming up i'm sure they will have sales. Plus they might include a free attachment.

IF YOU DO GET ONE MAKES SURE YOU CHRISTEN IT AND GIVE IT A NAME.

Mine is called Doris after my grandmother.

Good luck.

colabear71 Posted 22 Oct 2008 , 3:50am

I just thought I would remind you also to check for the awesome sales the day after Thanksgiving. Many stores put out ads in the Thanksgiving day newspaper, advertising what their earlybird sales will be. That is when I purchased mine. I got an awesome deal and only paid $150 for my KA.

denamarie77 Posted 22 Oct 2008 , 4:05am

Also at Kohls when you open a kohls card you get 20% off your purchases that day. Wait until they go on sale, open a card pay it off and cancel it.

beth2027 Posted 22 Oct 2008 , 7:16pm

colabear: WOW! icon_surprised.gif That's a great price. I have been keeping my ears open, but I live in such a small town that we have to drive an hour to get to any type of store better than a Wal-Mart. icon_smile.gif I try to check online ads and stuff on commercials so that I know when stuff is going on sale. I'll have to look around for the Thanksgiving sales.

colabear71 Posted 22 Oct 2008 , 9:30pm

Beth, I live in a small town too... only 10,000. And we don't even have a Wal-Mart icon_cry.gif I have to travel either 35 or 45 miles to the closest city... that is where I got the good deal...45 miles away. I do exactly the same as you. When I go shopping, I take the time to research the sales and clip the coupons and make a day of it. And that is what I did with my KA. I researched it, checked all the Thanksgiving day ads, as well as online ads, then went shopping the day after Thanksgiving. IMHO...it was worth the time and research.

beth2027 Posted 22 Oct 2008 , 10:18pm

colabear: I feel like I've found my long lost sister. icon_smile.gif I am an hour either way to the closest town of any size. It's actually 45 minutes to the closest interstate. icon_cool.gif I drive it once a week for a graduate class I am taking and my doctor is down there, so I get to a bigger town occasionally. I've been known to make a list of all the places I need to go and check them off one by one. icon_razz.gif

woodenspoon Posted 23 Oct 2008 , 2:35pm

Refurbished KA stand mixers pop up in the Friday Sale on Amazon with some regularity. I paid $99 (with free shipping) for my 4.5 qt KA five years ago. The larger models show up there as well.

jammjenks Posted 24 Oct 2008 , 1:46pm

Invest in a KA. You will NEVER regret buying good equipment!
