I tried this morning to make a number 2, and can't for the life of me figure out how to do it!! First, I tried rolling a "snake" of gumpaste and inserting the wire and that didn't work. Then I tried shaping the wire into the "2" and laying the snake on top and trying to press it INTO the wire, that didn't work. So finally, I just made the number "2" with gumpaste and laid it on a bed of cornstarch to let it dry. Oh, and I inserted a wire in the bottom.

I have no idea if this will work or not, so was wondering if anyone would share their techniques? Thank you so much!

I do not run the wire throughout the number. As you wound up doing, I just make the number, insert wires or skewer in the bottom just to have something to stick into the cake, and let the letter dry flat
