i need to make a 3 tier cake for this weekend to feed 50-60 and i am not sure what size to make the tiers. i don't want there to be a ton of waste but also want the tiers to be evenly proportioned. what are your suggestions?

Not sure if this is a party or wedding cake. Using Wiltons party guide 10", 8", and 6" would give you 60 servings.

The Wilton Guides can easily be found on their website, www.Wilton.com. Search for serving guides.
