Has anyone done this before? I tried.. and it didn't really work. Is there a trick to it? I chilled the cake and then tried to lightly press it on, but it took pieces of the icing off. I'm thinking I am going to have to cover it in fondant and do it that way, but they didn't want fondant so I would love to just do it on the icing itself. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Not sure about buttercream. Try rolled buttercream. Recipe on this site

sugaah, buttercream works because it crusts, but jeanne was talking about using the mat on a meringue buttercream, which doesn't crust.
