I have a client that wants a cowboy hat cake but doesn't want fondant. I've had two unsuccessful attempts at using rice krispy treats (one home made, the other packaged) and was going to try one more time. If it doesn't work, does anyone know if you can frost over the top of fondant or gumpaste without it breaking down? If it does break down, do any of you have any other suggestions?

I have made a cowboy hat out of buttercream, and just made the brim out of gumpaste, just die the gumpaste and buttercream to match. I use a crusting BC and just use viva to smooth it.

Thanks for your reply. The frosting is chocolate and I'm worried that I won't be able to get it to match. I'll dye the gumpaste after making the frosting and if I can't get it the right color, I'll try frosting the brim anyway.
