I have a first birthday cake to do in Nov and the theme is the game Candy Land. I want to get started on some of the elements as soon as possible so I'm done on time. I'm always running behind therefore brely getting any sleep.

Here are my ides:
*making the squares and cards out of fondant
*using the actual candy (cotton candy, gum drops) around that part of the board
*making color flow for some of the board parts to make them stand out a bit
*making the characters out of color flow
*using the finishing point as the smash cake and raising it a bit off the cake
*making color flow or fondant "happy 1st birthday ..."in the Candly Land font & color scheme

My main question is:
*If I do the characters in color flow how do I get them to stand up?

Any suggestions or thoughts are much appreciated.

Sara

If you scan down the post, there's also a link to an earlier post with a sketch of the decorations.

Good luck!

I think your ideas sound great! I like the idea of making a cake like the actual board.... can't wait to see the picture!

I found this cool site that has a lot of images that you may be able to use. You want to click on printables, and there are a lot of images that you can probably use as template. I looked at the flash cards, and I think those would look cute if they had the child's name spelt out or happy birthday or something. Hope it helps.

The first thing that come to mind for a Candy Land cake to me is a 2 or 3 tier Topsy turvy cake. With a "slide" (the candy land path you follow with the different colors) from one tier to the next. With people on it. Then different spots on the cake to represent the different "stops" in the game.

This definitely sounds like it would be a fun cake to do.

Can't wait to see it.

Thank you for your ideas and feedback. Since the theme of the cake is secret I really have noone to talk with about my ideas except for my brother. The party isn't til Nov so I have plenty of time to plan & start the work. Once done I will defintely post a picture.

The cake is done. I did the board game as an edible image. Then made fondant plaques of the cards & characters. My brother (the photoshop pro)he made all the characters, cards, and the gameboard to the sizes I needed. You can see the smash cake & cupcakes in my gallery.
