So I've seen a lot of cakes that use what looks like wire sticking out of the cake and fondant or gumpaste embellishments at the ends of them. I think that's such a great technique, but I was wondering if anyone had more info. about it such as:

Is there a certain type of wire to use?
Do you cover the part of the wire that sticks in the cake?
How far into the cake should you stick the wire?

Thanks for the help ahead of time!!!

wire: usually florist about 18 gauge or so (higher # = thinner wire)

yes cover it -- many use coffee stirrers as they can go in cake safely. other's use regular straws and others florist piks. reg. straws and piks might need something like piece of fondant to stabilize wire

push all the way down to cake board for most support.
