This is going to be my first cake that i'm making and i have a couple of months to practice but I need some tips.

I want to make the truck look as exact as i can. What would be best to use in order to do that?

Modeling chocolate, cake with fondant, or rice crispy treats, a combination of the three.

Any other tips and advice would be super helpful.
Im making this cake in april so I want to practice a couple times before the real deal.

THanksss.

It would help to know what kind of truck you're making - pick up? monster? 18-wheeler? dump? garbage?

When you say this is your first cake, what exactly does that mean? Have you ever baked a cake before? Or is this your first 3D cake?

Please provide more details and more specific questions.

I would also like to have some helpful hints on doing this or a tutorial. I need to make an 18 wheeler for March 4th and I don't have any idea of how to start.

What do most of you who do trucks make the tires?

Thanks.

Here's a link to the 3D trucks in the CC galleries:

If you pick one you like, it would be easier to address specific questions...

see this site:

http://members.nuvox.net/~zt.proicer/cakepict/semi.htm

if you don't have a long loaf pan, you could bake a 9x13 and split into 2 - 4.5x13 inch pieces and stack those to get the basic shape

Best tutorial EVER on 3D car/truck/boat - uh, actually, you can just about apply the technique to anything - is on a DVD by Mike Mc Carey. It is VERY reasonably priced. His website is http://www.mikesamazingcakes.com.

It shipped fast and simplifies and demystifies the whole process. You can see my green 3D car and the speed boat cakes in my gallery. Both used his technique even though only a car is made in the tutorial. It's money WEELLL spent! I'll be making a Ford Woody soon and reference his DVD every time. I actually play it on my lap top in the kitchen and follow along. You'll have your car/truck/boat carved in the perfect shape in under a 1/2 hour. He shows you how to make your cakes to "scale" so you aren't having to guess at angles and/or dimensions and so that it looks realistic and not cartoonish.

YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!

Hope this helps!

Made this Mack truck for a boy who's grandfather is a truck driver. This was a very heavy cake altogether but they loved it! http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=1350019
