50's Cake For My Daughters 8Th Birthday
For my daughters birthday, we redecorated her room in a 50's theme (I included a picture of this as well) so I thought a 50's theme cake would be a great option. This cake was not as detailed as my first cake making experience but I think it turned out great. I used basic store bought icing and colored it myself. The music notes on the bottom layer I hand drew and the records were cut out of store bought fondant that I painted them with black icing coloring. The silver beads that I used (last minute) were from a string of beads I bought from a resale shop. We washed them and cut the strings and just stuck them to the side. I am sure you can purchse silver edible candy balls but I was in a time crunch and had to make due with suff I already had. (I made sure to pull all these off before I cut the cake). The top )my FAVORITE part) I just used a small record that I also purchased from a resale shop. I used my DVD/CD label maker software from my computer to print the label. Again, I know this cake is not perfect but I was happy this my 2nd attempt as well!! Thanks again to everyone on the site who inspired this cake!!!

Strawberry Shortcake Birthday Cake
This was my first attempt on making my own stacked cake and my first time EVER to use fondant. I made the fondant myself using marshmallow cream, powdered sugar, and crisco (I will purchse it from now on as it was very difficult to make this smooth). Anyhoo, I iced all the layers using basic store bought icing. For the bottom layer, I drew the swirls by hand and the strawberries were cut out of fondant using a heart shaped cookie cutter and brown sprinkles for the seeds. The stripes were just stripes cut from the fondant as well. Between each layer I put a piece of fondant and draped it down the sides. I know this cake is no where near perfect but I was pround of my first attempt. Thank you to everyone on this site who inspired this cake!! It was a hit!!
