The football has a really nice leather like texture on the buttercream. The longhorns, letters, stripes and laces are all done in vanilla fondant. Did I mention how hard it is to achieve burnt orange with food coloring?

Betty Boop Cake
The top layer of this Betty Boop cake is butter/white cake with chocolate ganache filling covered in vanilla buttercream. Betty is made with a icing technique called color flow. She was extremely fragile. Her ear ring was painted with gold luster dust and some detail work was done with edible markers. it was lemon cake with freshly zested and juiced lemons with fresh raspberry cream cheese filling with vanilla buttercream. I loved the raspberry cream cheese filling, I mean you can go wrong with cream cheese, heavy whipping cream, sugar and fresh raspberries.

St. Patrick's Day
This cake is a Guinness porter dry stout chocolate sour cream cake with Ghirardelli chocolate ganache filling with a Baileys Irish whiskey cream buttercream frosting! What is supposed to look like a derby hat is a Butter pecan cake made with Guinness beer and Irish cream buttercream frosting covered in vanilla fondant. The buckle on the derby is painted with gold luster dust. The Derby is hand carved and I think the dome shape is ok but just didnt take the time on the brim and it didn't come out so well. You cant tell from the photos but there is a cupcake cut diagonal under the hat tilting his derby up on its side a bit. I think my little Irish man looks more like an Irish werewolf or caveman. I may have had one too many while I made this! But my 5 year old little neighbor loudly declared that this was the best chocolate cake ever! it really was fantastic and I dont like beer!

Hot Pink Bottle Of Nail Polish
What little little girl woun?t love a hot pink sparkly bottle of nail polish for her birthday! This cake was four 8 inch round white cakes covered in hot pink vanilla butter cream. White fondant daisies with black fondant centers. Each daisy was hand painted with pearl luster dust and dried in a flower former so the petals were curved. The handle to the bottle of nail polish was originally done with rice crispy treats and covered in black fondant but, it weighed almost 2lbs and would add too much weight to this already tall and heavy cake. So that idea was scratched and opted for non-edible styrofoam was covered in fondant instead. i forgot to weigh this cake but it was pretty heavy and pretty tall too at least 26 inches tall! Masquerade
Black, White and Red Masquerade Cake. This is a 6 inch on top of and 8 inch on top of a 12 inch round. This is my first time doing the quilting look. The silver beads are edible. All the cakes are all covered in my first attempt at making homemade marshmallow fondant! The homemade marshmallow fondant was very messy to make. I got excited about making it because I thought when I was done with the first 2-3 batches and it was resting that this was going to be a winner?making my own fondant would be a fraction of the cost And most importantly...it tastes a ton better! You can flavor the marshmallow fondant with any extract and its softer than regular fondant. I even made a batch with a bag of Gingerbread marshmallows... I had and had gingerbread flavored fondant! But...the next day when I went to roll out the fondant and cover the cakes I found out quickly that its elasticity stinks - it tears very easy and does not stretch well at all! And I also found out you can only color it when making it not after it done like regular fondant. Last, its not nearly as smooth looking as regular fondant. Up close you can see what I would call pits in the fondant. Not an all over smooth look like regular ?Disappointing - to say the least. I will have to do some more research before continuing on with homemade mm fondant. Any thoughts link or advise would be appreciated. Sorry about the shinny glare in the photos, it was not this shiny.

Harry Potter Hogwarts Birthday Cake
Happy Birthday to my son! He wanted a Harry Potter party so here is the cake idea we came up with together after looking at many ideas on cakecentral.com. The bottom cake is an 18x24 chocolate cake, the book is a white vanilla cake, the (mini) Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is butter yellow cake. All of the cakes were covered in butter/vanilla butter cream icing. The bottom cake is wrapped in chocolate fondant with a wood grain pattern in it. The castle is also covered in chocolate fondant and a brick pattern. The edges of the books pages were hand painted with food coloring watered down with corn syrup and water so I could paint with it. the font was dont with a etbile printer and cut out with a razor and placed on the book page. The wand, the book mark and glasses are also fondant. The doors are painted with gold luster dust. The scarf with fringe tassels is fondant as well pressed with something like fish scales inverted pattern press sheet. The grass is butter cream. The stars and moon are fondant painted with gold and pearl luster dust on floral wire. The Hogwarts crest in the lower right corner is an edible image. I was going to put in the center of the wood grain base but I didnt look just right. The snitch sits upon a pedestal of cereal treats with a stars and moon pattern on the fondant. The snitches wings are glued to the ball with melted butterscotch chips. The castles turrets are ice cream cones covered in black fondant with a ?scales? pattern. They are glued down with melted Ghirardelli dark chocolates. Whats a Magical birthday cake without some sparkler and fire candles! (photos not shown due to people in them). This cake has 26 cups of batter and I think 4-5 batches of butter cream. It was super heavy I didnt weight the cake. My photos are not so good, I think the cake came out really well. more photos and information at http://patticakespatticakes.blogspot.com/ . feel free to ask any questions...i am always happy to help as i am happy to get my questions awnsered by fellow amature cake decorators.

Harley Davidson Birthday Cake
One layer of vanilla sponge stacked on top of a layer of chocolate sponge with vanilla butter cream filling and vanilla butter cream frosting. This cake was a 10x10x4 square - it was pretty tall and very heavy. I had three motorcycles driving around the cake. I wanted to cheat and use an edible image for the Harley Davidson logo, but the bake shop would not print it due to copy right laws. I had to hand pipe the logo and the motorcycles out of butter cream. So I ended up using a mirror image of the motorcycle and logo and piping gel to stamp the image on the cake and then went over it with butter cream. I think the logo and motorcycles came out nice. What was very disappointing was the different powered sugar I used. For some reason it was very crystal like and the food coloring didn?t absorbed into the icing when I was coloring it. It seems to separate. the orange looked just awful. Now all I have to do if figure out which brand of powdered sugar I bought so it won?t happen again! Last photo had sparklers in the cake?what's a Harley cake without a bit of fire!!

Black And Gold Bridal Shower
This is a 6x3 and a 8x3 tiered french vanilla cake with strawberry filling covered in vanilla butter cream icing. The hearts are fondant and the dots are royal icing. The couple in love silhouette is made from color flow icing. Some cakes that are supposed to be not complicated turn out to bethis cake was certainly one of them . It didnt stack evenly I spend a long time trying to correct something that is darn near impossible to fix after it happens. Then I cant even tell you how long it took to smooth the icing. I got it where I was ok with it and then piped on the design she requested (this open heart with a hook ) and it looked awfullike a lower case m and j so I scrapped it offnote black icing on white leaves a purple rings had to scrap that off too. Then I put fresh icing on top of already crusted butter cream icing and tried to smooth it is even harder, it just doesnt spread it pulls the first layer. I should have switched to all fondant I just didnt have the time. I placed the ribbon that she wanted around the cake and it was too thin and looked weird, so I had to run out and by wider ribbon first thing this morning when the store opened. Then I quick colored some fondant black. Cut out the heart applied them and applied the color flow silhouette figures (a few times.. they kept breaking they are super fragile..glad I made several). Put the flowers on and the processed to fuss over everything. The spacing of the hearts, too many hearts..the ribbon not laying flat (I put it on 4 times) and the icing not smooth enough. I guess the good news is it transported well and nothing moved, feel off, slide or broke and it tasted really good. Really not sure why everything that is normally not a problem became so troublesome this time...In the end all with all the fixes I think it came out well and the host of the bridal shower seemed to like it.

Fraser Clan Tartan & Crest Cake
I made this cake for one of my co-workers. She and I are huge fans of all things Scottish. Our favorite book series is called the Outlander which is about a Scottish highlander from the clan Fraser. (I highly recommend it Diana Gabaldon's Outlander) The Fraser crest says Je Suis Prest which means I am ready. The bottom says Co`Latha Breith Sona Dhuibh Sassenach which means Happy Birthday Sassenach in Gaelic-Scots. The cake is French vanilla cake with French vanilla pudding added to the batter (make a slightly more firm cake). Its filled with half vanilla Bavarian cream filling and half strawberry filling. The sides are done with chocolate butter cream in the basket weave pattern with chocolate butter cream rope boarder. The top and rope boarder are done with vanilla/butter butter cream frosting. This has over 14 cups of batter and I lost track after 5 batches of icing I wish I would have weighted this cakeits very very heavy. This cake took 14+ hours to make and decorate (doesnt include research, shopping for supplies, set up, clean up or delivery). Its a surprise for hershe hasnt seen it yet, I cant wait to see her reaction! - update: She loved it and so did the whole office. Many complements on design and the outstanding flavors! Attached is a copy of the design I used for the Fraser crest.
