Surprise 30th birthday cake. First time making Gerber Daisies, and learned a few things for next time. Cake covered in MMF with daisies made of gum paste. TFL!
Dave's real kidney was being bid fair-well at a surprise party thrown by his wife. The couple participated in a 3-way kidney donation done at Uof M in July. Dave's wife received a kidney from another donor. All three recipients are doing well. The cake itself was red velvet (a REAL pain to carve) with cream cheese frosting and MMF, and served 40+. I am very honored to have been asked to help make their special celebration even more memorable.
Quilled Flowers, Butterflies, And Hearts
This cake was made for a Bridal & Baby Shower combination. The bride-to-be combined her bridal shower with a baby shower for her sister-in-law. She wanted a bright and fun topsy-turvy cake that incorporated her wedding colors, green and yellow, with a water melon pink for the for her future niece. This was a lot of fun to create. Thank you for all of the inspiration here on CC!
Sandy's Retirement/birthday Cake
Retirement/Birthday Cake for Sandy, a pharmacist at the hospital I work for for over 30 years. Her co-workers surprised her with this party @ work and you can guess the theme...
Two Peas In A Pod
Two Peas in a Pod carved to match the salt and pepper party favors given to guests at the bridal shower. Carrot cake filled with cream cheese frosting and covered in MMF. Pea pod cap molded from MMF. Sweet Pea flowers and leaves made from gum paste. Vines piped in with royal icing.
This cake is a maraschino cherry cake, with chocolate mousse filling, requested by the friend hosting the surprise shower for the mother to be. It is crumb coated in butter cream and covered in MMF. The flowers and the baby on top are made out of gum paste. We used real 1 1/2" inch satin ribbon for the bottom of each tier. TFL!
Pink & Brown Baby Shower Cake
This is a cake we made for a friend. She didn't really give us any direction, she just said to make it look cute. The bottom tier is a maraschino cherry cake with chocolate mousse filling. The top tier is WASC chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling. Both cakes were crumb coated in butter cream. I used chocolate MMF to cover the bottom tier, and regular MMF to cover the top tier. All of the decorations are made out of gum paste. The baby shoes on top match the pair I gave to the mother to be. I have never made baby shoes before and I love how the turned out. TFL!
Jonah's 2Nd Birthday
Spiral cake carved from Strawberry cake, covered with MMF, and decorted with MMF details on outside of cake, and 50/50 fondant/gum paste figures. Each figure is one of Jonah's favorates selected especially to represent each letter of his name: J-Jack from "Jack's Big Music Show", O-Olivia the Pig, N- Nemo, A-Alligator, H-Horse, and The Count to showcase his birthday number, #2. The fondant on the cake was a royal nightmare, that I peeled off and replaced with new, but still had problems with tearing. My wise instructor from the Wilton classes that I took last year told us more than once that a flower can be used to mask any problem, but for this cake it took a tree. Transporting the cake proved to be a little rough for the characters when my helpful 9-year-old son jostled them around in their box while carrying them in to the venue. Several ears, arms, and legs had to be reattached before they could be placed on the cake. Over all, I was very pleased with the results, and my sister and my nephew loved the cake. Jonah played with the characters for two days, and the Count survived to be taken to work by my sister so her co-workers could see him. A big "Thank-You" to all of those who previously posted inspirational characters that they have created in the past! TFL!
Elegant Ivory Wedding Cake
The bride wanted something understated, but not entirely plain, with a monotone color scheme in ivory. Cake Tiers: 12" WASC with raspberry reduction sauce; 10" & 6" both triple chocolate with chocolate mousse; and 8" banana with peanut butter fluff. All iced with butter cream with royal icing accents. There were no left overs from these cakse, and they even cut the top tier as well as serving a Snickers groom's cake. TFL
Snickers Cake: chocolate cake with nougat filling, caramel, and chopped peanuts. Chocolate butter cream icing, chocolate ganache, chocolate MMF/gumpaste roses, and pulled caramel sugar spirals. The bride and groom cut this cake instead of the bride's cake for pictures, and the groom's comment was that it "tasted absolutely phenomenal!" So excited! TFL
Contemporary/graphic Arts Bridal Shower Cake
Bridal shower cake designed to match the contemporary/graphics arts theme of the invitations. Red velvet cakes filled with chocolate mousse, iced in BC. Accents made with MMF and flowers made with gum paste. TFL!
Kristen & Ryan's Wedding Cake
Wedding cake for my nephew Ryan and his new bride Kristen. MMF with royal icing accents. 12" tier, maraschino cake; 10" tier, red velvet; 8" & 6" tiers, WASC. All tiers filled with raspberry reduction sauce and crumb coated with butter cream icing.
Punk Rock Cake
My daughter and I made this cake for a client. This cake is chocolate cake, peanut butter fluff filling, crumb coated with butter cream, and MM fondant. Its a ten inch square, and eight inch round. This little girl is turning ten, and she was having her birthday party at a bowling alley. My daughter made the guitar out of fondant, and modeling chocolate, it has real wire for the strings, she used purple sugar, to "glam" it up. This was our first time ever using modeling chocolate, or sculpting anything. The cake has sheet music on each side, and it is the actual happy birthday song written out. We tried to make her name in letters but, the wire wouldn't hold them up. So I printed letters out on paper, sugared them, and then taped them to the wire.
Heart Model Cake
This was my first unusual theme cake, created for an open heart surgeon's birthday. When my coworkers asked for a "heart" cake, I snapped a picture of the heart model we use for teaching with my cell phone...the rest is history. This cake was (and still is) the talk of the hospital! Chocolate (the doc's fav.!) sponge cake with chocolate buttercream filling, buttercream icing for decorating, and red licorice "vein grafts".....Oh yeah, my daughters dog ate one layer of the cake @ 9p the night before, before I decorated it. Needless to say, it was a short night of sleep.
